چکیده

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis characterized by sharp pain and severe swelling. Gout is known as the disease of kings since it its strongly associated with a diet rich in fructose and beer. Gout has a substantial effect on physical function, productivity, quality of life, and health care costs. It often causes severe pain and physical disability. Furthermore, Gout has no cure and it can lead to death. Gout is common in most countries in North America, Western Europe and Asia. More than eight million people in the U.S., almost 4% of the population, are estimated to suffer from gout. Gout is caused by the chronic elevation of uric acid levels in the blood. Recent studies suggest that a high uric acid concentration is the result of a dynamical process that highlights the interactions between leptin production, insulin resistance, low muscle mass and a diet rich in fructose. Once individuals develop hyperuricemia or reach a high uric acid concentration greater than 7 mg/dL for men and 6 mg/dL for women, they become susceptible to developing gout. We propose a novel dynamic system to analyze and determine the connections between a diet involving different levels of fructose (in both adult men and women in the U.S.) and the concentration of uric acid in the blood. Our model simulations suggest that adult males under a diet containing levels of fructose stimulating a 0.5 uric acid growth rate, could surpass the high uric acid concentration threshold after around 10000 days, while women pass the threshold in about 5000 days with a diet stimulating a 0.4 growth rate.

Cherry consumption and decreased risk of recurrent gout attacks.

OBJECTIVE To study the relationship between cherry intake and the risk of recurrent gout attacks among individuals with gout. METHODS We conducted a case-crossover study to examine the associations of a set of putative risk factors with recurrent gout attacks. Individuals with gout were prospectively recruited and followed up online for 1 year. Participants were asked to provide the following...

Mapping patients’ experiences from initial symptoms to gout diagnosis: a qualitative exploration

OBJECTIVE To explore patients' experiences from initial symptoms to receiving a diagnosis of gout. DESIGN Data from in-depth semistructured interviews were used to construct themes to describe key features of patients' experiences of gout diagnosis. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING A maximum variation sample of 43 UK patients with gout (29 men; 14 women; age range 32-87 years) were recruited from g...

Malabsorption Secondary to Gout-Induced Amyloidosis

Many chronic inflammatory conditions can lead to systemic amyloidosis. However, secondary amyloidosis has rarely been associated with gout, and the literature reports only a handful of cases, all presenting with renal disease. We report a patient with a history of poorly controlled gout who presented with malabsorption. Endoscopic biopsies confirmed a diagnosis of small intestinal amyloidosis. ...

The epidemiology of hyperuricaemia and gout in Taiwan aborigines.

To determine the prevalence of hyperuricaemia, gout and gout-related factors in Central Taiwan Atayal aborigines, 342 subjects over 18 yr old were interviewed and examined. A questionnaire was designed to screen for signs and symptoms of gout and gout-related risk factors. Serum uric acid, triglyceride and creatinine were measured in all subjects. The prevalence of hyperuricaemia was 41.4% and ...
